FROM LA MONTESCA FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. FRANCIS:
THE HERMITAGE OF BUON RIPOSO

"Religious or secular, believer or atheist, none of us can escape the charm of this mystical presence, and in rediscovering some of the old and forgotten paths through the woods and admiring the natural beauty, one can let the mind wander towards transcendent suggestions and feel somehow enriched in spirit"

MARCO BANI

St. Francis stayed in our valley for an entire month in 1224, and this was also the last time his presence was documented. The Hermitage of Buon Riposo, so dear to the Saint, was a stop on his journey from La Verna to Assisi and it is here that he stopped for the last time after receiving the stigmata. Originally, there was a hermitage consisting of some natural caves that opened onto the cliff, where hermits lived and meditated, having chosen this forest because it suited their way of life. Of these caves, only one remains visible and accessible, as the monastery was later built against the rock face. This cave is called "Devil's Cave" because, according to legend, it was here that St. Francis was tempted several times by the devil, and the branch protruding from the rock above the cave is said to resemble a demon trapped.

Starting from Umbria Camp, there are two possible itineraries to reach the hermitage: a short circuit lasting 2 hours and a long one lasting about 3 hours. Both routes, especially the long one, are accessible to everyone.
